Craft Idea of the Week: Prayer Flags
Prayer flags are believed to carry prayers and/or positive vibrations on the wind to spread goodwill and compassion throughout the land. Faded flags are a good sign, it means the prayers have been carried away by the wind.
To start cut a basic rectangular shape out of the material to allow for a ½” hem at top. For example, if you want a 6” square cut out a 6” X 6 ½” rectangle. Iron ½” hem down and now you can either hand sew, glue, or machine sew to create a sleeve. You can feed the string (ribbon or yarn) through the sleeve. Now it’s time to decorate. You can decorate with markers, puffy paint, fabric paint, embroidery, buttons, and/or applique. The choices are limitless. Before you hang your flags make sure to tack the squares to the string with either a knot, hand sewing, or glue.
Children of all ages can create their own unique prayer flags. Younger ones can help cut the square shape. It doesn’t need to be prefect and it is good practice to build fine motor muscles. Hand sewing is good practice for hand-eye coordination and building fine motor skills. Older children can be left to their own creative process.
Materials for prayer flags is available on the display cases at school. Enjoy and have fun!
